Red Fort Blast in Delhi: 8 Dead, Amit Shah Holds Emergency Security Review

A powerful explosion rocked central Delhi on Monday evening, killing eight people and injuring several others near the Red Fort area. The blast occurred close to Gate Number One of the Lal Quila Metro Station, prompting authorities to immediately seal off the area and suspend metro services as a precaution. The Union Home Ministry has confirmed that the incident is being treated as a suspected terror attack, with investigations underway under multiple stringent laws.

What Happened Near Red Fort

According to Delhi Police officials, the blast took place in a Hyundai i20 car parked near the Red Fort Metro Station around 6:45 PM. Eyewitnesses described a loud explosion followed by chaos, with flames engulfing the vehicle and debris scattered across the road. Several passersby and commuters were caught in the blast radius.

Fire tenders and ambulances rushed to the site as police cordoned off the entire area. The Lal Quila Metro Station has been temporarily closed due to security concerns, and traffic has been diverted from Netaji Subhash Marg and surrounding routes.

Casualties and Hospital Updates

Officials confirmed that eight people have died, while at least a dozen others sustained injuries, some of them critical. The injured have been admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Doctors at LNJP said most victims suffered severe burn injuries and shrapnel wounds. “We have received multiple patients, including two in critical condition. Emergency teams are working round the clock,” said an LNJP spokesperson.

Home Minister Amit Shah Calls High-Level Security Meeting

In response to the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has convened an emergency meeting at the North Block.
The meeting will be attended by:

  • Home Secretary Govind Mohan

  • Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director

  • NIA Director General

  • Delhi Police Commissioner

  • Senior officials from paramilitary and intelligence agencies

Sources say the meeting will review preliminary investigation reports and assess any possible terror links.

Blast Linked to Car Sold on Forged Documents

Early investigations suggest that the Hyundai i20 car involved in the explosion was registered under forged documents. Police have traced its previous ownership to a resident of Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, currently living in Faridabad, Haryana.

Authorities are probing whether the car was used to transport explosives and whether it has any connection to the 3,000 kg of explosives recovered in Faridabad earlier on the same day by Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Terror Angle Under Investigation

The Delhi Police have registered a case under multiple laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Explosives Act, and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police Special Cell are jointly investigating the incident.

A senior official told reporters, “Preliminary evidence points toward a terror plot, but it’s too early to confirm. We are analyzing CCTV footage and mobile data from the area.”

Prime Minister Modi Condoles Victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic incident, posting on X (formerly Twitter):

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the horrific incident near Red Fort. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. The injured are being provided all possible assistance.”

He also directed the Home Ministry to provide every necessary support to victims’ families and ensure a swift investigation.

Heavy Security Across the Capital

Following the explosion, security has been tightened across Delhi, especially in high-footfall areas like Connaught Place, India Gate, and major metro stations. Bomb disposal squads have been deployed at sensitive sites, while patrols have been increased near government buildings and embassies.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed that services on the Violet Line were temporarily disrupted as part of a precautionary measure.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Grim Picture

Witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion. “The car suddenly burst into flames, and there was a deafening sound. People started running in all directions,” said Mukesh Kumar, who was near the spot when the explosion occurred.

Another eyewitness said, “I saw people lying injured on the road. It was terrifying. Within minutes, the area was surrounded by police.”

Conclusion

As Delhi grapples with the shock of the Red Fort blast, authorities are racing to uncover the motive and masterminds behind the attack. With Amit Shah’s high-level security meeting underway and multiple agencies joining the probe, the focus now lies on identifying whether this was part of a larger terror network.
For now, residents have been urged to stay alert and avoid the Red Fort area as investigations continue through the night.
