"Pay Me Re 1 More Than Akshay Kumar": Sanjeev Kapoor Reveals Why He Rejected MasterChef India

A Matter of Principle: Iconic Chef Sanjeev Kapoor Walked Away From MasterChef India Over Symbolic One-Rupee Demand

The Indian television and culinary landscapes witnessed a massive digital breakout trend over the past 24 hours as internet users flooded search engines to uncover the details behind a fascinating revelation. Legendary chef and Khana Khazana pioneer Sanjeev Kapoor has officially opened up about why he repeatedly rejected MasterChef India during its initial launch cycles.

Speaking candidly with veteran journalist Vir Sanghvi on a recent podcast, the celebrity chef shared that his decision to walk away from the country's biggest cooking franchise came down to a single, non-negotiable principle regarding financial parity and professional respect.

"This Is My Field"

When MasterChef India debuted its inaugural season back in 2010, the producers naturally approached Kapoor to anchor the judging panel alongside Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar. However, Kapoor laid down a very specific, strict prerequisite before signing any contract paperwork.

He demanded to be paid exactly one rupee more than Akshay Kumar. Explaining his firm stance, Kapoor clarified that the request was never driven by ego or a desire to compete with a mainstream movie icon's star power. Instead, it was an absolute statement about domain authority. Kapoor stated:

"My condition was that I should be paid more than Akshay Kumar, just one rupee more. This was the first season, and there was nobody else who could do it but me. This is my field. If an actor comes into my field, why should he be paid more than me?"

When the producers balked at the condition during the initial negotiations, Kapoor comfortably chose to protect his professional integrity and completely walked away from the platform, refusing to even execute minor single-episode guest spots.

The Season 3 Turning Point

The initial seasons of the franchise moved forward featuring Akshay Kumar alongside chefs Kunal Kapur and Ajay Chopra. However, the show struggled heavily to replicate the authentic, grounded traction the network had anticipated.

By the time preparation for the third season rolled around in 2013, the production desk returned to Kapoor with a radically altered approach. Kapoor recalled the network representatives admitting:

"Sir, it's not working. We need you. What do you think we should do?"

Kapoor recognized that if a global intellectual property as massive as MasterChef permanently collapsed in the Indian market, it would cause a devastating setback for the broader food entertainment and television space. Driven by a desire to see the entire ecosystem expand, he agreed to finally step into the judge's chair.

When asked if the television network ultimately yielded and fulfilled his original one-rupee compensation benchmark, Kapoor laughed and concluded:

"Oh, obviously they did. Obviously. That was not negotiable. If I can't command that, then what's the point?"
