LPG Shortage Concerns in India as Oil Prices Cross $100 Amid US–Iran War
LPG shortage fears grow in India as US–Iran conflict pushes crude oil prices above $100 and supply concerns increase.
India is closely monitoring its cooking gas supply as global tensions push energy prices higher. The conflict between the United States and Iran has sent crude oil prices above $100 per barrel, raising concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supply chains.
Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have assured citizens that domestic LPG production has increased significantly and the entire output is currently being directed toward household consumption. However, reports from several cities suggest that commercial users such as hotels and restaurants are already feeling pressure due to limited availability.
Domestic LPG Production Increased
The government has said that domestic LPG production has been increased by nearly 25 percent in response to rising demand. The additional output is being directed mainly toward households to ensure that families do not face disruptions in cooking gas supply.
Officials say the move is part of a broader strategy to protect essential domestic consumption during global energy uncertainty.
Priority Supply for Essential Services
Authorities have also prioritised LPG supply for critical sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. These facilities depend heavily on stable gas availability for daily operations.
The government has instructed distribution agencies to ensure that these sectors receive uninterrupted supply even if commercial demand rises.
Uttarakhand Takes Precautionary Steps
The Government of Uttarakhand has already taken preventive steps to manage possible shortages. Officials have decided to prioritise commercial LPG cylinders for hospitals and educational institutions.
At the same time, the state has begun preparing alternative options such as arranging wood fuel for commercial use if supply disruptions worsen.
Situation Reviewed by State Officials
A high-level meeting was held in Gairsain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan chaired the meeting with district officials and representatives from oil and gas companies.
The review focused on monitoring LPG supply levels and ensuring that emergency contingency plans are ready if required.
Restaurants Facing Difficulties in Hyderabad
Restaurants and hotels in Hyderabad are already facing serious challenges due to limited availability of commercial LPG cylinders.
Some restaurant owners claim that supply shortages have forced them to switch to traditional wood-based cooking methods.
Hotel Owners Report Rising Costs
Nadeem Quadri, owner of a restaurant in Hyderabad, said several eateries in Telangana have temporarily shut down due to LPG shortages and rising costs. Others are trying to continue operations by switching to alternative fuels.
According to him, both LPG and wood prices have increased, making it difficult for small businesses to maintain operations.
Black Market Allegations Surface
Some restaurant owners have alleged that LPG cylinders are being sold illegally in the black market. This has further complicated the situation for businesses that rely on regular supply from official distributors.
Authorities have not yet confirmed these claims but say monitoring efforts are ongoing.
Government Exploring Additional Fuel Sources
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said the government is actively exploring new sources of fuel supply.
He added that the government is working with international partners to ensure that India continues to receive adequate energy resources.
Strategic Importance of Strait of Hormuz
Officials have also highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime oil routes. A large share of global oil and gas shipments pass through this narrow waterway.
Due to diplomatic sensitivities and security concerns, some details about supply routes cannot be disclosed publicly.
Businesses Turning to Alternative Cooking Methods
In Bhopal, restaurants and commercial kitchens are also adapting to the situation. Some establishments have started using induction cooktops while others are exploring alternative fuel sources.
A large fast-food chain operating multiple outlets in the state has already begun shifting part of its cooking operations to induction systems.
Government Monitoring Situation Closely
For now, officials say there is no nationwide LPG shortage. However, localised disruptions and rising prices have raised concerns among consumers and businesses.
Authorities continue to monitor supply chains closely while preparing contingency plans to ensure that cooking gas remains available across the country.
The coming weeks will be crucial, especially if geopolitical tensions continue to affect global energy markets.
